2025 NWT Water Stewardship Award

2025 NWT Water Stewardship Award Highlights

We’re proud to recognize Lauren Nolan and Terrell Knapton-Pain as the two recipients of the 2025 NWT Water Stewardship Award.

The GNWT Department of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Indigenous Steering Committee, established the award in 2024. The award honours individuals and organizations in the NWT who have made significant contributions that align with the vision of the NWT Water Stewardship Strategy: to ensure NWT waters remain clean, abundant, and productive for all time.

  • Lauren Nolan

Northern Youth Leadership and Taiga Environmental Laboratory nominated Lauren to recognize her contributions to water stewardship in the North. She combines scientific knowledge with land-based learning and mentorship to empower young Northerners and support community-led water stewardship across the territory.

  • Terrell Knapton-Pain

The Tłı̨chǫ Government nominated Terrell for his leadership in supporting the Tłı̨chǫ Government’s Aquatic Ecosystem Monitoring Programs. Over the past five years, Terrell has coordinated fieldwork, trained community monitors, and bridged scientific methods with Indigenous knowledge to ensure strong, intergenerational approaches to protecting water in the Tłı̨chǫ region.
