What is Aquatic Ecosystem Health?

Healthy aquatic ecosystems ensure the Nortwest Territories (NWT) waters remain clean, abundant and productive for all time. Monitoring aquatic ecosystems allows us to track and measure changes to water quality, quantity, rates of flow and biological parameters over time and space. It is thus important to review factors that could affect aquatic ecosystem health and review existing monitoring programs, practices and research in the NWT.

The water stewardship partners are working together on the following aquatic ecosystem health goals:

  • Review existing water monitoring programs, practices and research in the NWT, identify and prioritize gaps.
  • Review factors that could affect aquatic ecosystem health.
  • Determine consistent approaches to research and monitoring to increase understanding of the aquatic ecosystem.
  • Develop and implement collaborative ecosystem-based research and monitoring programs.
